Canoes In Sloughs

Intel TV Spot Celebrates Save The Bay
Intel supports Save The Bay's
Canoes In Sloughs program.

Canoes In Sloughs provides middle and high school students with day-long experiential canoe trips on the Bay. These trips introduce and connect students
to their local marshes and the greater San Francisco Bay estuary.

Carefully designed to meet the California Science Framework and Science Content Standards, Canoes In Sloughs is student-oriented, local and on-the-water. Teachers work with Save The Bay’s experienced education staff to create individualized programs that are consistent with their existing science curriculum.

Save The Bay’s Restoration Program complements Canoes In Sloughs by involving students in a hands-on stewardship project. We encourage classes to participate in both programs.

Locations
Save The Bay launches canoe trips from 11 different sites in the East Bay, North Bay, South Bay, and Delta. We prefer to conduct trips in close proximity to participant schools to increase the likelihood that students will return to their local site again and again. Some sites are accessible via public transportation. Our staff will help you determine which site best suits your needs.

Pre-Trip Classroom Visits
Save The Bay educators provide one-hour pre-trip in-school lessons to participating schools. Educators use maps, activities, and a slideshow to prepare students for their trip(s), introduce students to concepts that will be addressed in the field, and acquaint them with San Francisco Bay.

Costs
Because we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to participate in Canoes In Sloughs, trip cost is based on a sliding scale, determined by the percentage of students at the school eligible to receive free or reduced price lunches. Private or parochial schools must demonstrate need through a written request. Cost per student ranges from $5 to $35. In-class presentations range from $10 to $60 per presentation based on the same sliding scale. Canoe trips require a minimum of 15 participants, and no more than 27 participants (one teacher required). We welcome ages 10 and up.

Safety and Instructor Qualifications
The safety of participants is our primary concern. Save The Bay has an impeccable safety record and we have never experienced a medical emergency on a trip. Our instructors are experienced outdoor educators, trained in canoe rescue and emergency procedures, and certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. Our sites are evaluated for safety and have been used safely for many years. We will not paddle in unsafe weather conditions.
